Sheila Pitt has been volunteering in our communities for more than 40 years. Her journey began in 1966 at the Guyana Association when she was just 20 years old. From that point until 2019, she’s remained an active volunteer for various organizations across our region. Even in retirement from her roles as federal and municipal employee, Sheila found her calling as a community advocate.
A true trailblazer, Sheila pioneered Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations in Ottawa when no formal event marked the day. It all started in the 1970s when she created an annual MLK event at St. Albans Church, featuring a service attended by the U.S. Ambassador as the keynote speaker to bring people together on an important day.
