On the evening of June 16, during Capital Rainbow Refuge’s Annual General Meeting, Yves Brunet was recognized for more than a decade of dedicated support to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
As the AGM concluded, a quiet anticipation filled the room—a surprise announcement was about to be made.
Derek DeLouché, a member of the Community Builder Volunteer Recognition Team, took the stage to deliver the surprise: Yves Brunet was presented with a Community Builder Award, honoring his unwavering commitment and contributions.





The crowd cheered as a surprised Yves joined Derek on stage to accept his award. Yves addressed the crowd, sharing a heartfelt story about the importance of supporting those in need, especially in today’s world. He reflected on the idea that even small acts of kindness can create a significant impact for those who are struggling.

Yves Brunet has dedicated more than a decade of his life to volunteering passionately within Ottawa’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community, focusing specifically on supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ refugees who seek safety and acceptance in Canada. His warm and nurturing personality shines through in his role as a leader and mentor within various sponsorship groups connected to Capital Rainbow Refuge.
Capital Rainbow Refuge stands as a beacon of hope for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals fleeing persecution in their home countries due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. As a key figure within this organization, Yves plays a pivotal role in coordinating sponsorship efforts and providing support to newcomers, ensuring they receive the resources and guidance needed to rebuild their lives in a safe environment.
