The evening of November 6, 2024, was very special for us. A long-time supporter of the Ottawa charitable and philanthropic social scene, Caroline Phillips, was awarded a very deserving Community Builder Award.
On November 6, 2024, the Ottawa Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) held their 30th Annual Philanthropy Awards (the PHILS): an evening to celebrate dedicated fundraising professionals across Ottawa, all committed to supporting important causes our community counts on to thrive. The room was packed with more than 400 people all gathered to show their appreciation for those creating lasting change.
As the evening’s welcome reception wrapped up, Derek deLouché, a volunteer with our Community Builder Award (CBA) recognition team, helped us surprise the crowd and Caroline with a United Way East Ontario Community Builder Award.
The room roared with celebration as Caroline joined Derek, Mark Taylor, VP of Resource Development at United Way East Ontario; Jeff Todd, President of AFP; and Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of Ottawa, on the stage.
A common theme heard throughout the night was that volunteerism and fundraising are team sports. Caroline embodies this theme daily as she is someone who joins everyone’s team to support their mission. Her award is a physical representation of thanks, not only from United Way, but from the whole charitable sector for her invaluable contributions.

Caroline Phillips has been a beacon of community spirit throughout her more than 16 years of volunteerism. She has highlighted hundreds of non-profits and charities in Ottawa for many years using her writing and photography skills to showcase the invaluable work of the charitable sector. Her enthusiasm and positivity have brought attention to countless initiatives, and inspired others to engage in philanthropy. Whether through major fundraising events or intimate gatherings, she has brought the spotlight to the generosity and commitment of the city’s residents.
You’ll often find Caroline going above and beyond the call of duty. From covering the Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa fundraising breakfast to the Wabano Gala and the SnowBall Gala and numerous charity events in between, her work brings events to life, connecting readers to important local causes. As a respected voice in Ottawa, she has developed strong relationships with politicians, business leaders, and non-profit executives, ensuring that the city’s most important charitable events are seen, heard, and
supported. Additionally, her involvement with organizations like the TELUS Community Board and JUMP IN for Women’s Heart Health demonstrates her deep commitment to community service.
In addition to her volunteerism, she has played a significant role at the Ottawa Business Journal, where she has expertly covered the local business scene, highlighting success stories that shape the economic landscape. Through her journalistic work, she has amplified the voices of those working to make Ottawa a better place, consistently advocating for important issues. Her dedication to philanthropy has been instrumental in raising awareness and financial support for Ottawa’s charitable organizations, leading to untold millions in donations over the years.
Caroline’s unwavering dedication to sharing Ottawa’s good news and supporting the community makes her more than a journalist—she is a true advocate and unifying force. Ottawa is undoubtedly a better place because of her passion and tireless work.
